This is a random photo of my doggie, Samson. I found him on December 9, 2003. He'd been hit by a vehicle and had broken hips and a few other injuries. My aunt told me he was dead because he'd been there a few days. When I saw him licking his paw, I called a friend to put him in my Blazer and off to the vet we went. He's been my constant companion since that day.
What I am to do with this Random 5 Friday is to post five random facts about something in my life. Okay ... here goes:
1. A black cherry tree fell, landing across the stream by my house. With the heavy rains that's been happening lately, it's caused erosion. I had to have the tree cut out of the way today. It was covered with poison ivy BRANCHES! Did you know poison ivy grew that big? At first we thought it was tree branches but the leaves did not match the black cherry tree. The trunk of the poison ivy was bigger than my thigh. No joke.
2. I was hit by a drunk driver when I was 17 years old (1981). We were riding a motorcycle. The drunk thought we were someone else and came straight for us. My boyfriend died. I have been a hemi-pelvectomy amputee for 33 years now. I woke up one morning in April 1996 and my remaining foot was paralyzed. I've used a wheelchair since then.
3. I live alone and am 100% independent. I do everything that anyone else does from cutting grass to cooking to cleaning to complaining about grocery shopping.
4. I worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers for 18 years until I had to take disability retirement in October 2001 due to health reasons. Horrible day. I am always embarrassed to tell that because I feel useless. I loved my job as a cartographer.
5. I hate grocery shopping. But I love to cook and eat so I have no choice.
Well, next time I'll have all happy randomness. ha I've decided to not hide anymore so I may as well get some things "out there."
Wishing you a great weekend.
Hi LesleyAnn!
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of Samson. I'm so glad you were able to save him after he his accident. We tried to save our rat terrier, Charlie three years ago, after he was hit, but he didn't make it.
I cannot imagine, even a drunk person, driving straight into people on a motorcycle. That just blows me away. That ordeal must have been unbelievable. I'm glad you made it through and are able to be independent. You had a really cool job! Thanks for posting the random 5.
I hate grocery shopping, too! I forgot it was Friday and went today...oh my goodness, that store was packed.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
You are my hero. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteBless you for rescuing Samson.
And thank you bunches for joining up at R5F this week. I hope you make it a habit. xo
Thank you Nancy. I was nervous at first but I'm glad I joined the R5F and will be doing it again for sure. All of my animals are rescue other than my Quaker parrot. I'll be posting in R5F about them.
DeleteIt's nice to meet you LesleyAnn, sister in the Lord. :) I saw the "branches" you mentioned growing in and around some trees at my in-laws place. My husband said they were poison ivy. I had no idea either! I'm sorry to hear about your accident, and job loss for health reasons. And I don't know anyone who likes grocery shopping! Poor Samson, I'm so glad he has you. It's hard to think he lay there for days, hanging onto life. What survivors the two of you are! I like the quilt background on your blog. Are you a quilter?
ReplyDeleteIt's me again! I just saw you're from WV, where I was born and raised--Fairmont.
ReplyDeleteHello Patti! Thank you for stopping by. I am not a quilter but I love quilts. They remind me of my granny, who was a quilter. I'm from a tiny town in West Virginia, about 30 minutes south of Huntington.
DeleteHi Lesley Ann- I'm in love with your Samson's cute little face...what a brave soul he is..and you are a sweetie for rescuing him. Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank you Terri. Samson's getting some age on him. I look at him like I do myself: when did all that "white" happen?! haha At least I've got Clairol. lol He's 10 years old this month.
DeleteDitto, you are a hero. You have what is called spunk. I cannot imagine an animal laying as though dead for so long. You are a super hero for rescuing him.
ReplyDeleteHello Gracie, My stomach hurt when I saw what condition Samson was in. He was laying in a ditch that had water with a frozen surface. I think that is why he didn't appear to be in much pain when my friend picked him up. He was numb. Thank you for your kind words.
DeleteMy baby brother was in a terrible car accident and has been a quad and in a wheelchair since the 1980's also. He works for the Gov't on computers but I am not sure in what capacity...and seems to really love his job. Before his accident he was a Woodsman. Worked for Boise Idaho lumber Co. He was a master craftsman and built the most beautiful furniture. He used to carve beautiful things. He had to retrain as he could no longer do the work he loved.
ReplyDeleteHe also does everything for himself. He had been married before his accident and had three children and was already divorced when this happened to him. Now he is a grandfather of two. He has braces on his hands so he can use the computers. He no longer lives alone but because he remarried a wonderful woman from Canada.
I watched him go through all sorts of difficult times, but like you he has come through with flying colors. He is wonderful. So are you!!
Thank you. I'm glad your brother didn't let life get him down and that he's doing well.
